SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

The Serengeti National Park is Africa’s most famous tourist destination. The word Serengeti comes from the Maasai word Siringet which means “endless plains”. The whole Park is a UNESCO world heritage site and covers 14,763 square kilometers. Serengeti is among the richest grazing grounds in African bush composed of endless grassy plains. The park is well known for an incredible number of predators, over 500 species of birds, and a concentration of more than two million grazers of the great migration. Serengeti is the most outstanding wildlife reserve in the world, nowhere else to match its awesome experiences. The formation of Kopjes in the north, endless plains in the south, breathtaking sunset, and concentration of animals makes a safari in the Serengeti so remarkable.

More than two million animals migrate from Serengeti National Park to Maasai Mara Game Reserve every year. The annual movement of wildebeests is accompanied by other animals such as zebras (the leaders of migration), Grant gazelles, Thomson gazelles, and Impalas. The annual wildebeest migration is the greatest reason that has made Serengeti national park one of the world’s natural wonders.

The annual wildebeest migration takes place in four main areas as follows:

Serengeti South / Ndutu area (the calving season)

Duration: December to march

The early stages of Migration commence when the herds are in Calving. The calving season event takes place in Ndutu the Southern part of Serengeti in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Once the calving season is over and the calves have already fed on the nutrients of the Ndutu area, the migration to the central part of Serengeti.

Serengeti Central / Seronera Area

After the calving season, the great migration proceeds to the central part of Serengeti known as Seronera. The area is filled with enough grasses, water sources, and nutrients to feed the herds of migration. Exceptional big games are guaranteed in this area due to the high concentration of animals. The herds spend some time in this area to gain more strength before proceeding with their journey to the North via western corridors.

The Western Corridor and Grumeti

Duration: May to Mid-July

The Western Corridor follows the path of the Grumeti River. This region provides great wildlife action around May and June when the migrating herds cross the shallow water of the river Grumeti and proceed their journey to the North. The western corridor is a great area for unspoiled wildlife viewing.

 Serengeti North / Mara River Crossing

Duration: July to October

The great migration of wildebeest in Serengeti’s Northern part involves the Mara River crossing. This event takes place from around August to late October (sometimes the crossing may prolong to early November). The migration will stay in Masai Mara Game reserve before coming back to South Serengeti for the Calving season in February.

NGORONGORO CRATER

The Ngorongoro Crater is a spectacular destination in Africa to see the Big Five animals.

It is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and the best destination to spot the big games in Africa. Over 2 million years ago, Ngorongoro was a volcanic mountain with an equal height to the roof of Africa “The mount Kilimanjaro”.

It was then transformed into a gigantic inactive volcano as a result of the eruption. The collapse of the highest mountain many years ago has made us today speak of a bowl measuring 20 kilometers wide with sides up to 610 meters deep.

TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK

Lies slightly off the main northern Tanzania safari route, Tarangire National Park is an adorable and Fantastic Park to visit. Reputed for its highest concentration of elephants, buffalos, birding, and authentic safari atmosphere, the park has a lot to offer. Tarangire is the 7th largest National park of Tanzania behind Nyerere, Ruaha, Serengeti, Mikumi, Katavi, and Mkomazi National parks. Tarangire is often referred to as small Serengeti due to its superb cat life.

 

Tarangire River which runs from north to south acts as the main source of life during the dry season and the name of this reputable park originates from the Tarangire River. The presence of this river is of paramount importance especially during the dry season as it attracts many predators who remain around the river surroundings to ensure themselves with a water supply and the majority of prey who comes to drink water. Apart from the main Tarangire River, the park has several water sources which also act as good wildlife viewing points.

 

The park has a game viewing area that is about ten times the size of its neighbor park the Lake Manyara National park. The concentration of games from July to October is so exceptional in the Tanzania Northern Safari circuit. During these seasons of the year, Tarangire offers an exceptional atmosphere and habitats which are quite different from the other parks.

ZANZIBAR

Zanzibar Archipelago consists of many small Islands but Unguja and Pemba Islands are the largest of all. Zanzibar Best Beaches

Nungwi and Kendwa (North Part)

These are the best beaches on Zanzibar Island. Absolutely beautiful and classic Indian Ocean paradise. You will experience non-tidal turquoise waters and powdery white sands. They are the most visited beaches and sometimes the place can be busy.

Pongwe (East Part)

Pongwe lie in a little concave bit of coastline which means the beach is magnificent, it is seaweed free and very pretty. Less busy than the northern beaches.

Paje and Dongwe (Eat Part)

At this location, the best accommodations are guaranteed. The beaches are impressive, but the sea is very tidal than on the northern Nungwi beach.

 Matemwe (at the North East part)

Matemwe is slightly tidal and located eastern part of Nungwi beach. The best accommodation is also guaranteed here.

Kizimkazi (South)

This part of Zanzibar Island is well known for its soft sand beaches. Swimming with a dolphin at Kizimkazi, is one of the most fascinating experiences ever.

MIKUMI NATIONAL PARK

Mikumi national park is one of the Tanzania national parks that is located in the Southern part of the country. It’s one of the few parks that are close to the former Tanzania capital city Dar es Salaam. It was established in 1964 and managed by the Tanzania National Parks Authority.

 

It’s the fourth largest national park in Tanzania covering a total land area of 3,230 square kilometers.

Mikumi national park was among the least visited national park due to poor accessibility till the express highway was construct that connected Dar es Salaam with the South African Countries hence boosting the number of visitors to the park. It is estimated that by 2012 the park received around 41,666 visitors which came from across the world.

 

Mikumi national park is named after the popular dominant Palm tree species that is commonly found at the park called Borrassus Spp. The tree is exceptional in that it grew at the park but with no stems seen from anywhere in the village. The park also shares its name with the village which is named after the park.

Famous For:

  • African Wild Dog population and its large eland population. The largest member of the antelope family cuts a striking figure as it grazes on the open fields, and the park’s huge array of bird life (over 400 species) make it a birder’s paradise as well.

ARUSHA NATIONAL PARK

Easily accessible National Park and the perfect place for a day trip and this makes it a convenient getaway either at the beginning or the end of one’s broader safari itinerary. At just 552 square kilometers, there’s no doubt that Arusha National Park is a small but adventure-laden wildlife PARADISE. With a mountain, lakes, a crater and an incredibly diverse amount of birdlife covered mostly by green, it has a wonderful feeling of tranquility and solitude. It is dominated by Mount Meru, which at 4,566 m is the 5rd highest free-standing mountain in Africa. You will be driven from Arusha at 8:00 am heading to Momela gate, get an armed ranger and head out on an easy paced walking safari that will give you the chance to experience tremendous amount of wildlife in the park. GOMBE NATIONAL PARK

Gombe Stream National Park is located in the westernmost region of Tanzania along the shores of Lake Tanganyika.  The national park encompasses an area of 14 square miles (35sq km) making it the smallest national park in Tanzania as well as most of Africa. The park consists of grasslands, woodlands, steep valleys, and tropical rainforest.   The diversity is surprising for such a small region.  The area where the monkeys and primates are found is dense jungle, which some may describe as a true Tarzan-like setting.

Famous For:

  • The location where Jane Goodall pioneered her behavioral research conducted on the chimpanzee populations.

NYERERE NATIONAL PARK

Now the Largest National Park in Africa, Nyerere National Park is a newly established Park which is part of what is known as Selous Game Reserve. The name of the Park is given in honor of the founder of the Nation, the Late Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere.

The Park has been established in the year 2019 and covers an area of over 30,000 square kilometers. With its largest wilderness area in Africa, Nyerere National park has relatively undisturbed ecological and biological processes, including a diverse range of wildlife with significant predator and prey relationship.

The might Rufiji with its renowned population of hippo and Rhino flows to the Indian Ocean. The river has been designated as a photographic zone and is a popular tourist destination. The sheer volume of games in the Nyerere is just outstanding!

 

Elephant, buffalo and lion are found in greater numbers and the park, together with the remaining part of Selous has the last true stronghold for African wild DOG. Visitors to this vast park will be able to enjoy the widest diversity of safari activities in the country, like boating safaris as well as standard game drives, walking safaris and legendary fly camping trips.

 

Famous For:

  • Wildlife: lions, wildebeests, giraffes, zebras, hippopotamuses, rhinos, antelopes, hyenas, African wolves, and a large number of crocodiles in the Rufiji River. Most notably the park is also known for its prolific population of African Wild Dog.

RUAHA NATIONAL PARK

Is the largest national park in Tanzania. It covers an area of about 13,000 square kilometres. It is located in the middle of Tanzania about 130 kilometres from Iringa.

 

The park is part of a more extensive ecosystem, which includes Rungwa Game Reserve, Usangu Game Reserve, and several other protected areas. The name of the park is derived from the Great Ruaha River, which flows along its South-Eastern margin and is the focus for game-viewing.

 

The park can be reached by car via Iringa and there is an airstrip at Msembe, park headquarters. Ruaha National Park has a bimodal pattern of rain forest; the short rainfall season begins November to February, while the long season is between March and April.

 

The park experiences its dry season between June and October. The park is one of the Tanzania birds’ paradise with more than 571species and some of them are known to be migrants from within and outside Africa. The park is characterized by semi-arid type of vegetation, baobab trees, Acacia and other species. There are over 1,650 plant species that have been identified.

Famous For:

Ruaha has the largest concentration of elephants in East Africa with a population of around 10,000 of these gentle giants. Ruaha is also home to 10% of global lion populations. You also have a chance of seeing leopards, cheetahs, zebras, elands, giraffes, impalas, bat-eared foxes, snakes, crocodiles, and jackals.

MAHALE NATIONAL PARK

Like Gombe National Park, Mahale is known for its population of wild chimpanzees and its stunning natural beauty.

Mahale is renowned for its large population of wild chimpanzees. Like Gombe National Park, Mahale has also been a site of important chimpanzee research conducted by Japanese primatologist Toshisada Nishida.

Visitors to Mahale have the opportunity to track and observe these fascinating primates in their natural habitat. One of the distinctive characteristics of Mahale National Park is its remote and isolated location. MAFIA ISLAND

Katavi National Park is a renowned national park located in southwestern Tanzania. It is one of the less-visited but incredibly diverse and untouched parks in the country, making it a hidden gem
